Sarah has always loved being around children. After college, she began work as a nanny for various ages and enjoyed it but wanted more of a challenge to encourage youth to learn and grow. She found a temp job as a para-educator at a middle school and was initially nervous that she wouldn't be able to connect with youth who are so often forgotten. Instead, it was an inspiring eye-opener for her as to how a little determination and a lot of heart and passion, you can truly make a difference in children's lives.
When Sarah discovered an internship focusing on Theatre Education in 2015, she felt it would be the perfect opportunity for her to combine her two favorite things together. The internship was all she hoped for and more, including teaching creative drama classes of various ages, sizes, and themes, as well as co-directing a performance-based camp. Some of the classes she taught over the summer of 2015 include, Pete the Cat, Dr. Seuss, Frozen, and Disney Jr. Four weeks of the internship were spent co-directing Zombie Prom, the musical, with 25 teenagers, as well as costuming and marketing the show and assisting with music directing and choreographing.
The Internship at the Omaha Theater Company fueled Sarah to return to Des Moines with ideas and passion to instill in young minds! During the school year 2015-2016, Sarah was the instructor for theatre after-school classes at the Des Moines Social Club, grades 2-5. She taught voice lessons through ArtForce Iowa, a program that provides arts training and job-placement assistance to court-involved youth, ages 14-17, and, in connection with that program, she assistant taught drama-based ELL classes, grades 3-10, through Des Moines Public Schools.
Now that she lives in Berlin, she does most of her teaching online through VIPKid, that connects English teachers with young students in China. Sarah also works as a nanny and an English tutor.
